THE LULL BEFORE THE STORM
Another blisteringly hot winter day in Mijas. Another gathering of worldly Hashers by a river bed near Monda, almost 20K inland from the Costa and a world away from the impending Corona inflicted panic on stock markets around the rest of the world. Black Monday was only a few hours away, but for us another Blue Sunday was all we needed, oil price wars and stock market mayhem was the last things on our minds.
I was more concerred about my boots, where are they? Not in the back of my car with the clean pairs of socks. Had they been misplaced in Competa? Had the phantom footwear freak pounced in the night? All these things and more buzzing through my head. Was Corona finally getting its wicked way with me? Was my injured leg going gangerous and effecting my sanity?
Alas I was only clad in Chinese fake Crocks, these could never stand the rigours of a JSW trail with a Red Hot Chilli thrown in the mix.
My fate was sealed, another Hash in self isolation. To follow the pack would be madness and against government advice of "social distancing" if not feeling 100%. My only saviour being Sir Sparky TOB who was equally poorly shod in the feet department. His city slicker shoes not really appropriate for a dried up river bed and anything else further up stream, short of a quick nip to the nearest bar via a surprisingly intact Roman road. His fate was also sealed.
King Canute was late, we pointed the way to Corona Heaven and he would soon catch up and would surely overtake the pack.
Their journey would take them into virgin land, up up and more up, with a few down and another up, before a welcome beer and a chance of getting to know some new faces on our Hash. Jafart had brought along some new blood. More international first time Hashers all keen to experience the thrill of the wind in the hair, flies in the teeth, blood from the legs and sweaty beer stained shirts that is Hashing in Mijas.
Some visiting Hashers including Flying Bottom & Wheelchair, amongst others I have no recollection of names, only faces in a crowd or unfamiliar voices in the circle. I'm sorry I should have been paying more attention.
A cava stop by a cemetery was a novel idea, as was offering two types of Mushroom starters when there was clearly only the one for the On On meal, my soup was a good choice.
Sir Sparky and I returned to the circle at around 5pm expecting a sweaty pack to soon descend on us, only Mummys Boy appeared within our predicted time slot. He looked knackered as normal with tales of waiting for ever at the Cava stop. Where the hell are they all?
JSW had done it again!
After an hour they started to emerge from the river bed, soon the pack had returned to base, all intact and many thirsty for BEER!
Well done you lot.
The circle before sunset was needed to welome the new faces, slap a few beers down their necks and give them a laugh before they realised how much pain they were really in.
Plenty of beer flowing for everyone, and softies for the softies. The RA left behind his trousers and put on a dress, all for the women, bless them. What have women ever done for us? Like those Romans leaving old roads and viaducts laying around the place, rubbing it in our faces how superior they are, so Sweet and Low took over from the RA.
We were into dangerous territory now, and I got my second down down for losing my boots.
Lots of Anniversaries with Hash Flash for the day, Marcus Skidius with 50 and a mug.
Red Hot Chilli 55 and not injured
Cabin Boy 60 and looking every day of it.
From Behind in a dress and 70
Yogi 260 and just about standing
JSW 380 and bouncing
Swiss Roll 585 and missing in action
Kinder Garden kop 595 and crying
Mummys Boy 685 and still alive
Sandra Bollocks has two kids
Time to eat, and we did in La Boma
Don’t argue with the boss about mushrooms. There was only ever Soup or Mushrooms in a crusty tart, so just sit down and eat.
Hen meat curry or three meat roast dinner and veg, so don't give me any grief, and yes you can have a Pacheran, a glass to share between the lot of you!
And so it ended on international womens day, two stressed out women loosing the plot trying to please the Mijas Hash.
I do hope they woke up on Black Monday feeling better about life, two weeks down the line and we could all be in lock down, Milan Hash style.
On that sobering thought I look forward to next week, for the St Paddys day Corona free run.
Now wash your hands.
