RUN 1638 – HARE OF THE DOG RUN – SUNDAY 19th MAY 2019
So after the frivolities of Saturday night fever, dance and debauchery, celebrating two brilliant, hard days of Hashing, the Sunday run should have been a relaxing affair for those few hardy soles who wished to be up with the dawn chorus and stretching tired limbs. To our surprise, on a crisp, bright and hot morning the majority of those who had travelled to sunny Costa Del Sol in celebration of Mijas H3 30th anniversary were assembled, resplendent in their purple Mijas Anniversary polo shirts, on a car park in front of Fuengirola’s Marine Port eager to partake in one of three designated A to B runs, terminating at a horse riding venue and show, mid afternoon. Us Hares, having already mapped out a short, medium and long run, had already set off laying chalk and flour as our GM was explaining how each run wound its way out of the town and what awaiting them at the Circle.
“From Behind” and your truly, “Muzzle-Im” were tasked with executing the long run so the following is reporting that part of the day’s events only. Keep the ‘long run’ easy and comfortable the Committee said. Fat chance us Hares muttered. Did they not know they had given the task to the “Mijas Dream Team”, two Hares that thrive on challenge. One being a red-blooded Viking, the other with routes back to the Peaky Blinders.
So after depositing their day-bags onto coaches a larger than anticipated contingent of runners set off at mid-day, following chalk arrows down the seafront promenade towards the Castle end of the town. With fewer check-backs than we would have liked the trail headed down the Rio Fuengirola, now a dry riverbed and through a modern Romany campement where thirsty runner could pause for refreshment at El Rengo’s tavern and check out the locals. Yes, us Hares were being nice by allowing not one but three beer stops!! We also ensured our visitors would experience the majesty of the surrounding countryside, a look into our history and culture and a run through the sewer works.
So after taking in the sights and smells of organic recycling our trail led past a working archaeological Roman dig and onto a dry riverbed before emerging at the second beer stop, a small ‘cantina’ where our thirsty runner could stop for drinks, tapas and watch the local horsemen ride up to an elevated bar allowing them to drink and discuss the issues of the world, or at least who was playing shite in La Liga. For those true hashers (front running b’stards) more dry river beds beckoned as they weaved a trail up through fields full of late spring flowers and hellish spikey bushes and onto a network of hills and small valleys. Long ago being a possible plan for a golf course it is now the home to 200 goats and at times budding Red Bull scramble bike enthusiasts. Us Hares had to trick the runners into not seeing the distant, and main organised final beer stop in fear they would deviate straight for it and miss out on the wonders of viewing the Sierra Blanco and Sierra de Mijas Mountains. Climbs similar to that goats like awaited the final leg-in to the beer stop, at 11 kms distance, where runners would be joined by those who had chickened out and had gone for the medium and short runs. So after prising the runners out of the beer wagon and frisking them for empty crisp packets and bags of ice tucked into shorts, they all set off on a scenic tour through yet more hills and valleys surrounding a urbanisation called La Sierrezuela for the final 4 kms into the Horse riding school and the Circle.
The afternoon’s frivolities that awaited the runners included rides on finely attired horse and buggy carts, the art of pouring and drinking a Spanish sherry from a traditionally costumed lady and tapas washed down with copious amounts of beer. The Circle was treated to a rendition of our RA impersonating an impersonation of himself impersonating a late departed local famous resident British comedian impersonating Hitler, complete with his ‘little helpers’. All us Hares were duly christened with usual down downs followed by a number of bawdy songs and the usual beer chugging events that befall runner victims that ‘had a story to tell’......
Post Circle we were all led into the show arena and were treated to a spectacular cultural delight of Spanish Horse riding and synchronised dancing. Please refer to the many pictures and videos on-line in testament to this show and all the other delights of that day. The evening was rounded off with a sumptuous meal, more wine and beer and a flamenco dance troupe ably supported by international hashers showing us ‘their moves’...... So with only one broken hand, courtesy of “Aphrodisiac”, all happily and in some cases unknowingly returned by coach to their hotels to end a great Sunday run.
